Learn More: Sickle Cell & Newborn Screening

What is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?

Sickle Cell Disease is a serious inherited blood disorder that affects the shape of red blood cells, making it difficult for them to carry oxygen throughout the body. It can cause severe pain, infections, anemia, stroke, and even early death—especially if left undiagnosed and untreated.

SCD is most common in sub-Saharan Africa, India, and among people of African descent around the world. In Ghana, over 18,000 babies are born with SCD each year.
